Strength: Very strong103 bits

Guessing it offline would take trillions of years at 10 billion tries a second.

How to generate a strong password

  1. 1

    Choose password or PIN

Pick a password for accounts and Wi-Fi, or a numeric PIN for phones, cards and door codes.

  2. 2

    Set the length

Use at least 16 characters for important accounts. Longer is stronger, and a password manager will remember it for you.

  3. 3

    Pick the characters

Keep uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols on for the strongest result. Turn on "Avoid look-alike characters" if you will type it by hand.

  4. 4

    Copy and save it

Copy the password, or choose one of the alternatives, and save it in your password manager straight away.

Strong passwords without the guesswork

People are bad at choosing random passwords: we pick words, dates and patterns that attackers try first. This generator removes the human from the process. It draws every character from your browser's secure random number generator, makes sure each character type you chose appears at least once, and shuffles the result.

Tips for keeping accounts safe

  • Use a password manager. It remembers long, unique passwords so you don't have to.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for email, banking and anything that holds client data.
  • Never reuse a password, especially your email password, which can reset everything else.
  • Share Wi-Fi without reading it out: turn your network password into a scannable code with the QR code generator.

Running a business? Keep client details safe and send documents from a secure account with the invoice generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator safe to use?

Yes. Passwords are generated on your device with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (the Web Crypto API). Nothing is sent to a server, logged or stored, and a new set is created every time the page loads.

How long should my password be?

At least 12 characters, and 16 or more for email, banking and work accounts. Every extra character multiplies the number of guesses an attacker needs, so length matters more than clever substitutions.

What does the strength meter measure?

Entropy: how many guesses a random password of that length and character mix would take, shown in bits. Around 60 bits is fair, 90 bits or more is very strong. The time estimate assumes a fast offline attack of 10 billion guesses a second.

Should I use a different password for every account?

Yes. When one site is breached, attackers try the same email and password everywhere else. A unique password per account, stored in a password manager, stops one leak from unlocking the rest.

When is a PIN enough?

Only where attempts are limited, such as a phone that locks after a few wrong tries or a bank card. A 6-digit PIN has a million combinations, which is far too few for an online account password.
