Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 15% or 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.15 or 0.20. A quick mental shortcut for 20%: move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a 64.00 bill, 10% is 6.40, so 20% is 12.80.

How much should I tip?

Customs vary by country. In the US, 15 to 20% is usual at restaurants. In the UK, 10 to 12.5% is common and is often added as a service charge. In much of Europe and Asia, rounding up or a small tip is normal. Check the bill for an included service charge first.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional, but many people tip on the total for simplicity; the difference is small. To tip before tax, enter the subtotal from the receipt as the bill amount.

How does rounding up work?

Each person's share is rounded up to the next whole amount, so nobody has to deal with coins. The extra goes to the tip, and the calculator shows the tip percentage after rounding.
