What is a work order?
A work order gets everyone on the same page before a job starts. The customer knows what will be done and roughly what it will cost; the technician knows where to go, what to do and what to bring; and you have a record that the work was authorised and completed.
What to include in a work order
- Customer and job site address.
- A description of the work, access notes, the assigned technician and the priority.
- The scheduled date.
- Materials and labour as separate sections, each with quantity, unit and rate.
- A completion sign-off for the customer.
Work order vs estimate vs invoice
An estimate tells the customer what a job might cost. A work order schedules and authorises the job. The invoice bills for the work once it is signed off.
