What goes on a packing slip
- Ship-to address and the customer's name.
- The order number, so the customer knows which order the parcel belongs to.
- Items with SKUs, the quantity ordered and the quantity shipped.
- Carrier, tracking number and package count.
- A short note, for example how to report missing or damaged items.
Why packing slips matter
A packing slip cuts down "where is the rest of my order?" emails, because partial shipments are shown clearly. It speeds up returns, because the customer has a list of SKUs. And it helps your own team pick and pack accurately.
Packing slip vs sales order vs invoice
A sales order confirms what the customer ordered. The packing slip shows what went in the box. A delivery note is signed by the customer when the goods arrive. The invoice bills for it. Each one carries the order details across, so nothing is retyped.
