Limit to check against

0 / 280

280 left

The limit for standard accounts. X counts links, emoji and some scripts differently from plain letters, so leave a little room.

Limits change, so check the platform if it matters. Your text stays in this page and is never uploaded.

How to check a character limit

  1. 1

    Pick what you are writing

Choose X post, Instagram caption, Instagram bio, meta description, SMS or your own limit.

  2. 2

    Paste or type your text

The count and the characters left update as you type. The bar turns amber near the limit and red when you go over.

  3. 3

    Trim until it fits

Cut text until the warning goes away, then copy it into the app or page where you need it.

Stay inside the limit

Every place you publish has its own length rules. Paste your draft, pick the place, and see at a glance how many characters you have left before you copy it across.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit for an X post?

Standard accounts can post up to 280 characters. Premium accounts can write much longer posts, but only the start shows in the timeline. X counts links, emoji and some scripts differently from plain letters, so leave a little room if you are close to the limit.

How long should a meta description be?

Google sets no fixed limit. It shortens descriptions to fit the width of the result, which usually works out to about 155 to 160 characters on a computer and fewer on a phone. Aim for roughly 150 to 160 and put the important words first. Google may also write its own snippet instead.

How many characters fit in one text message?

One SMS holds 160 characters when it uses the standard GSM alphabet, or 70 if it contains an emoji or a letter outside that alphabet. A longer text is split into parts of 153 (or 67) characters, and each part is usually charged as a message.

Why does one emoji change my SMS count so much?

A single character outside the GSM alphabet, such as an emoji or a curly quote, makes the whole message switch to Unicode, which only fits 70 characters instead of 160. The SMS mode lists the characters that cause it so you can swap or remove them.

How long can an Instagram caption or bio be?

Captions can be up to 2,200 characters and a bio up to 150. Hashtags count towards the caption limit. Only the first few lines of a caption show before “more”, so put the important part first. Instagram can change these numbers, so check the app if it matters.
