How to count the words in a text

  1. 1

    Paste or type your text

Type in the box or paste text from a document, an email or a web page. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2

    Watch the counts update

Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs change as you type, along with the reading and speaking time.

  3. 3

    Edit until it fits

Trim or add text until you hit the length you need for an essay, an article, a speech or a post.

Count words for essays, articles and speeches

Teachers set word limits, editors ask for a number of words, and a talk has to fit its time slot. Paste your text and see where you stand, then keep editing and watch the figures change.

Good to know

  • Checking a social post or a meta description? Use the character counter to see how close you are to a platform's limit.
  • Text in the wrong case? Fix it with the case converter.
  • Working from a PDF? Copy the text out, or split the PDF first so you only paste the part you need.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter decide what a word is?

Anything separated by spaces or line breaks that contains a letter or a number counts as one word. So “e-mail”, “don’t” and “3.14” are each one word, and a lone dash or row of dots is not counted. Chinese and Japanese, which have no spaces, are split into words using your browser’s built-in dictionary.

How is the reading time worked out?

Reading time divides the word count by 238 words a minute, which is the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction. Speaking time uses 150 words a minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or voice-over. Slow readers and fast talkers will differ, so treat both as a guide.

What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?

Characters counts everything you typed: letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces and line breaks. Characters without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Some forms and applications ask for one and some for the other. An emoji counts as one character.

How are sentences and paragraphs counted?

A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space, so decimals like 3.14 and addresses like example.com do not split a sentence. Abbreviations such as “e.g.” can add an extra sentence. A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next by a blank line.

Is the text I paste kept anywhere?

No. The counting happens in your browser and the text is not saved or sent to a server. Close the page and it is gone.
